Redesigning Trello's Inbox to encourage users to use different plugins

What's the background?
Project Scope and Overview
During my internship at Atlassian, I was tasked with redesigning Trello's Inbox experience to introduce users to different browser quick-capture methods (essentially Trello plugins). The main pain point was that many users weren't aware of the Inbox surface in general—or that they could add cards to a Trello board through quick-capture methods from Slack, Teams, email, and more.
Outcome
Shipped Experience
We were able to roll out the new experience and saw substantial growth in the number of users engaging with different quick-capture methods. Many users also started to understand the value proposition of the Inbox surface and how it tied to those quick-capture methods.

Impact
We achieved a 21% increase in usage rates with the new experience

Reflections
My Key Takeaways
- Actively Seeking Feedback — One of the most important things I learned throughout this project and my time at Atlassian was to consistently seek feedback from my team. As an intern, it can be daunting to ask questions, but I made a point to get feedback from my manager and the rest of my team during weekly design critiques. I also learned the importance of collaborating with Engineering and PM partners to understand what was feasible to build and to ensure the work supported key KPIs.
- Pivoting Design Direction — I had to pivot the design direction a few times when the initial concept was either too complex to build in a short timeframe or the designs weren't achieving the intended outcome. I made sure to iterate based on usability sessions and on feedback from stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
- Managing Multiple Timelines — I worked on a few other projects during my internship, many of which had overlapping timelines. Learning to manage my time and work with stakeholders to align on priorities was pivotal.
